Primer, mortar, tiles, spacers

Tape measure, brush, level, wooden template, drill, pointing trowel, safety mask, mixing end, bucket
Useful Idea
A surface in good condition: helps the tiles stay in place and prevents cracks after the application. If slopes, cracks or holes exist on the surface, we should cover them up with repairing mixture. (The repairing mixture dries in about 12 hours). Preparing the surface is one of the requirements of a proper tiling application. The surface should be clean. We should get rid of all the remains on the surface using a hammer and a cold chisel.
Buyers Tip
Before we begin tiling, it’s best to check the product information and instructions specified on the boxes of tile, mortar and grouting packages. We should pay attention to the coherence between the production dates, colors and sizes of tiles specified on the boxes.
Steps
1.
Measuring: Let’s begin by measuring the length and width of the wall that we will tile.
2.
Planning the layout: Before we tile the wall, we should align the tiles on the floor based on the taken measurements by placing spacers in between the corners of the tiles. This provides a correct calculation, for the number of tiles that will be necessary.
3.
Applying primer: Let’s now apply the primer onto the wall using a brush. (During hot weather conditions the water inside the mortar evaporates. Once the water is absorbed, it is difficult for the tiles to stay firmly on the wall. The primer prevents quick absorption of water. The primer is a transparent material. Once it is applied it dries within an hour. The mortar is applied once the primer is dry).
4.
Measuring with the level: We now place the level on a 5 cm thick wooden template to measure if there are any existing slopes. Since the length of the level does not cover the length of the wall, we place the level on a long wooden template and the slope is measured accordingly. We should apply repairing mixture with a pointing trowel for existing slopes. The drying time of the repairing mixture is about 12 hours. (If the slopes are about 3-20 mm. thick, we should use thick repairing mixtures).
5.
Placing a wooden template: After measuring the difference between the tiles laid on the floor and the wall, let’s place a wooden template (that is the same size as the measured difference) on the base of the wall. Let’s make sure the wooden template is not sloping by using a level. Now we begin tiling upwards starting from the wooden template. This wooden template placed on the floor will prevent the tiles from sliding down the wall.
6.
Preparing the mortar: Let’s now place the required amount of powder specified on the product package into a bucket. We should pour the water slowly into the bucket. For our safety let’s put on face masks in order to prevent inhaling the powder.
7.
Mixing the mortar: We now place the mixing ends onto our drill and begin stirring the mixture until it reaches a distinct thickness. After stirring, let’s wait for 10 min. for the mixture to settle into its proper form. (If we do not have mixing ends, the mixture can also be prepared by using an aluminium stick). The mixture will dry in 3-4 hours, so we should not keep it waiting for that long. Once the mortar is applied on the surface, the tiles should be set in place within 15-20 minutes. We should apply the mortar based on our working speed.
