Experienced 1 hr.
Handy 2 hrs.
Beginner 3 hrs.
Based on 15 metre-square area
Note: The drying time is 24 hours after tiling of wall is complete
Materials
Mortar, spacers, tile borders, tiles
Tools
Notched trowel, rubber mallet, safety gloves, tape measure, pencil, tile cutter, wooden template
After we tile the wall, we should put tile spacers in between the corner of the tiles. Spacers are used so that there is room
in between the tiles to be filled with grout later on.
Steps
1.
Spreading mortar on the wall: Let’s apply the mortar on the wall surface using the straight section of the notched trowel. Then we should spread the mortar
on the wall in equal thickness using the notched section of the notched trowel.
2.
Putting the tile on the wall: After spreading the mortar, let’s put the tile starting from the wooden template that we have placed on the bottom of the
wall, by starting from the bottom prevents the tiles from sliding down. Then, we should settle the tile by pushing it into
the wall.
3.
Knocking with a rubber mallet: We should knock on the wall tile with a rubber mallet to check whether the tile has settled on firmly. A clump sound means
that the tile is in place. (We can check if the mortar has stuck on the back of the tile by lifting it with a pointing trowel.
For the tile to firmly stick to the wall, at least 80% of the mixture should be on the back of the tile).
4.
Putting the second tile on: Let’s put the second tile next to the first tile and place a tile spacer in between the tiles joints. Then, we should repeat
the same steps over again.
5.
Installing the borders: The border tiles enhance the apperance of the walls. (The borders should not be placed behind the washbasin, mirror or cabinet).
Once we decide where to have the border, let’s spread mortar on the wall and put the border tiles in place with spacers in
between them.
6.
Putting the other tiles on: Let’s continue tiling our wall by placing spacers in between each tile joints.
7.
Measuring the gap: Once we have completed tiling our wall, let’s take out the wooden template placed on the bottom of the wall. Then, let’s
measure the gap below the tile (distance between the tile and the floor).
8.
Marking with a pencil: We should mark 1.5 cm. less then the taken measurement on the bottom tile (for the grout to be applied, space should be left
between the ground and the wall).
9.
Cutting the tile: Let’s place the tile face-up in the tile cutter and align the traced cutting line with the guide on the cutter and let’s pull
the handle towards ourselves.
10.
11.
Putting the tile: We can now put the tile on the bottom of the wall. Then let’s place the spacer in between the tiles and between the floor.
12.
Waiting for the mixture to dry: We now wait 24 hours for the mortar on the tiles to dry. In cold weather, the drying time may take about 48 hours. If grout
is applied before the mortar dries, the moisture will stay inside and cause stains on the tiles.
