Useful Idea
Once we lay our tiles on the floor, we should place tile spacers in between the joining points of the tiles. Spacers are used to leave space in between the tiles to be later on filled with grout.
Steps
1.
Spreading mortar on the floor: Let’s apply the mortar on the floor surface using the straight section of the notched trowel. Then we should spread the mortar on the wall in equal thickness using the notched section of the notched trowel. The mortar dries in about 15-20 min. once it is spread on the floor. For this reason we should spread the mortar according to our working speed.

Setting the tile: After spreading the mortar, let’s set the tile on the floor and press down on the tile for it to settle in with the mortar.
3.
Knocking with a rubber mallet: We should knock on the floor tile with a rubber mallet to check whether the tile has settled in firmly. A clump sound means that the tile is in place.
4.
Setting the second tile: Let’s set the second tile next to the first tile, then we should repeat the same steps over again.
5.
Checking if the tile has stuck on: Let’s check if the mortar has stuck on the back of the tile by lifting it up with a pointing trowel. For the tile to firmly stick to the wall, at least 80% of the mixture should be on the back of the tile.
6.
Placing the spacers: After setting the tiles let’s place the spacers in between the tile joints. Then we should set the other tiles following the same steps mentioned above.
7.
Measuring with a tape measure: The dimensions of the floor may not always fill out an exact number of tiles necessary. We should measure the sections where we need to cut the tiles in order for them to fit properly.
8.
Marking with a pencil: We should mark the taken measurements on the tile with a pencil.
9.
Cutting the tile: Let’s place the tile face-up in the tile cutter and align the traced cutting line with the guide on the cutter and let’s pull the handle towards ourselves.
10.
Setting the tile: Let’s set the tile we have cut on the ground, where mortar exist.
Waiting for the mixture to dry: We now wait 24 hours for the mortar on the tiles to dry. In cold weather, the drying time may take about 48 hours. If grout is applied before the mortar dries, the moisture will stay inside and cause stains on the face-up sides of the tiles.
